Boston, May 4, 2006--- Mt Washington Bank President and CEO, Ed Merritt, joined bankers nationwide on April 25th speaking at two Boston elementary schools for the 10th annual National Teach Kids to Save Day. The American Bankers Association Foundation established this program in 1997 to teach children and teens from kindergarten to grade 12 essential life skills about money they can use to become financially responsible as they mature.

Ed Merritt visited with both the Perry Elementary School students in South Boston and the pupils at Dorchester Youth Academy. Merritt led the students in various age appropriate activities to teach them sensible spending, budgeting and how to distinguish wants verse needs. Students received new piggy banks where they can start turning their sense into cents. The children also had the opportunity to open a new account that day and the Mt. Washington Bank Foundation contributed the first $5 into each account.

Students took different messages away from their meeting with the bankers. One student learned “If you earn $50 then you should save $20 for college.” Other children had more long term, ambitious goals such as saving for rent or a house. Regardless, the students learned a useful lesson early on about the importance of saving.

Founded in 1893, Mt. Washington Bank has stayed committed to the promise outlined in its mission statement by being "full-service independent bank, offering financial services to meet the needs of its retail and small business community. Mt. Washington recently announced the opening of its new Gallivan Boulevard branch in Dorchester, representing the Bank's fourth branch location in addition to a stand alone loan center.
