South Boston, MA - - - Today, Mt. Washington Bank, a locally operated, independent, mutually-owned community bank, was joined by Mayor Menino and other City officials and community leaders, to break ground on its fifth branch and second in Dorchester. The $4 million construction project located at 305 Talbot Avenue is considered to be one of the largest private construction projects west of Washington Street in a decade. Slated to open in August 2007, the 4,000 square foot Codman Square branch will include a room that can accommodate up to 30 people and be used for community meetings and events.

“Today marks an important step in an exciting development project for both Mt. Washington Bank and the City. As we move closer to opening our second branch in Dorchester, the residents and small business owners of this vibrant community can look forward to having a true community bank in the neighborhood to help meet its financial service needs,” said Ed Merritt, President and CEO of Mt. Washington Bank. “We understand the responsibility and value of being a great corporate citizen and believe the Codman Square neighborhood will see us demonstrate this in ways that benefit the whole community.”

In January, the Bank completed demolition work on the site that housed an abandoned building. The new branch, in addition to providing a full range of financial services, will have a two lane remote drive-through with a 24-hour ATM and ample customer parking.

“Mt. Washington Bank has a great reputation as a corporate citizen in our city, and this multi-million dollar development on Talbot Avenue is another example of their commitment to Boston’s neighborhoods,” said Mayor Thomas Menino.

Founded in 1893, Mt. Washington Bank has stayed committed to the promise outlined in its mission statement by being "full-service independent bank, offering financial services to meet the needs of its retail and small business community. Mt. Washington recently announced the opening of its new Gallivan Boulevard branch in Dorchester, representing the Bank's fourth branch location in addition to a stand alone loan center.
