South Boston, MA - - - At its annual community breakfast on March 13,
2007, the University of Massachusetts Boston recognized Mt. Washington
Bank President and CEO Edward J. Merritt with the Chancellor’s Longstanding
Community Commitment and Service Award.
“I am honored to receive this distinguished recognition on behalf
of my colleagues at Mt. Washington Bank,” said Merritt. “Through
the work of the Mt. Washington Charitable Foundation, which was founded
in 2002, we are able to fulfill our commitment to be a good corporate
citizen and neighbor. We strive to have a positive impact in the communities
we serve by supporting programs involving education, youth and the arts
and social services agencies,”
Merritt was appointed president and CEO of Mt. Washington Bank in 1999.
Under his leadership, the bank has grown into a full service financial
institution with over $480 million total assets and 120 employees serving
the communities of South Boston and Dorchester.
During his tenure, Merritt has overseen the expansion of the bank’s
presence in the industry growing it from a two branch operation to four
branches and a fifth branch slated to open in the summer of 2007 in the
Codman Square neighborhood of Dorchester.
In the University’s press announcement about this award, Chancellor
Michael Collins said that the university “is proud each year to
recognize the commitment of residents and business leaders of Boston who
work to build stronger communities.” According to Collins, corporate
citizenship exemplified by leaders like Ed Merritt are worthy and deserving
of the University’s recognition and thanks.
Founded in 1893, Mt. Washington Bank has stayed committed
to the promise outlined in its mission statement by being "full-service
independent bank, offering financial services to meet the needs of its
retail and small business community. Mt. Washington recently announced
the opening of its new Gallivan Boulevard branch in Dorchester, representing
the Bank's fourth branch location in addition to a stand alone loan center.
