South Boston - - -Mt. Washington Bank was ranked 47th among the top corporate charitable givers in Massachusetts, according to a recent report by the Boston Business Journal. With over $283,465 in donations in 2006 alone, the Bank was recognized for its charitable giving to programs that support the education, youth and the arts in the communities the Bank serves.

The announcement was made on September 6 at the second annual Corporate Philanthropy Summit held in Boston and attended by more than 650 leaders representing a wide range of local and national companies with a presence in Massachusetts as well as many non-profit organizations.

The Summit was led by the Boston Business Journal, in partnership with The Boston Foundation, the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of Massachusetts Bay.

“After the second year of researching and fostering dialogue on corporate philanthropy, we continue to see major corporations partnering with leadership in our communities to solve social issues and improve the quality of life for many in the area,” said Mike Olivieri, publisher of the Boston Business Journal.

“We are very proud of this distinction by the Boston Business Journal, said Edward J. Merritt, President and CEO of Mt. Washington Bank. We are honored to be in the company of such great philanthropic organizations like State Street, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Liberty Mutual, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Raytheon.

So much of what we do at Mt. Washington Bank in terms of corporate philanthropy is driven by our mission of being a great corporate citizen. And for us that means “giving back” and supporting the diverse needs and programs of the communities we serve.”

The Summit featured a CEO panel including Merritt that discussed the major corporate concerns over charitable giving that was followed by instructive sessions on corporate philanthropy for business and non-profit leaders.

“The Summit is just a part of our greater effort to understand the importance of corporate philanthropy to the business sector, non-profits and our communities,” said Boston Business Journal Editor, George Donnelly. “We look forward to further shedding light on this important business and civic issue into the future.”

Mt. Washington Bank is the fastest growing business bank in Boston. An independent, locally operated institution with five branches in South Boston and Dorchester, Mt. Washington Bank offers a full array of financial services to individuals and businesses in the communities it serves.
