Mt. Washington Bank Awards Scholarships To Eight Dorchester and South Boston Students

South Boston, MA September 19, 2005 – Eight local students will have an easier time paying tuition this year after receiving a scholarship award from Mt. Washington Bank.
On Wednesday, August 24, Edward Merritt, President and CEO of Mt. Washington Bank presented $8,000 in scholarship awards at a reception held at Mt. Washington Bank on Gallivan Blvd. This year’s recipients are:

From South Boston
• Christine Cannon St. Leo University
• Cale Putnam Worcester Polytechnic University
• Ngoc-Tran Vinh Vu The Winsor School
• Jing Zhong University of Massachusetts – Boston

From Dorchester
• Michelle Dellascio Boston University
• Olivia Hoxie The Woodward School
• Cynthi Loesch Boston College
• Delroy McDonald Catholic Memorial High School

“The students receiving scholarships today are among the best in South Boston and Dorchester,” said Edward Merritt, President and CEO of Mt. Washington Bank. “We are thrilled to help them further their education and achieve their goals.”

All high school and college students living in South Boston and Dorchester are eligible to apply for the scholarship awards. The awards provide support to high school students attending tuition-based high schools and students attending accredited colleges and universities. Applications for the scholarship program are available beginning in April and must be submitted by mid-June. Applicants are considered based upon contributions to their school, community and family as well as plans for the future, including education and career goals. All applications are reviewed and the recipients selected by a panel of educators.

The Mt. Washington Bank Scholarship Awards began in 1993, on the 100th anniversary of the bank’s founding. To date, more than $67,000 has been awarded to deserving students.

Founded in 1893, Mt. Washington Bank has stayed committed to the promise outlined in its mission statement by being "full-service independent bank, offering financial services to meet the needs of its retail and small business community. Mt. Washington recently announced the opening of its new Gallivan Boulevard branch in Dorchester, representing the Bank's fourth branch location in addition to a stand alone loan center.
