Meet the Senior Management Team

President and CEO

Picture - Edward J. Merritt, President and CEO Edward J. Merritt is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mt. Washington Bank, one the oldest and fastest growing community banking institutions in Boston. Since Merritt's appointment in 1999, Mt. Washington Bank has grown into a full service financial institution with over $470 million in total assets and 120 employees. Serving the communities of South Boston and Dorchester, Merritt has overseen the expansion of the bank's infrastructure from a two branch operation to four and a fifth branch scheduled to open in 2007.

During his seven year tenure, Merritt has created a culture of excellence at Mt. Washington Bank both in the areas of customer service, as well as community service. Based on his business philosophy which is that to be a great corporate leader you need to be a great corporate citizen, he founded the Mt. Washington Charitable Foundation in 2002. Through the Foundation, ten percent of the bank's annual profits are dedicated to non profit organizations that support educational, youth and cultural programs in the communities in which it serves.

Prior to his appointment at Mt. Washington Bank, Merritt served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Abington Savings Bank from 1986-1998. After establishing a record of success in the key financial areas of the bank, in 1992 Merritt assumed the additional responsibility of building the bank's brand in the marketplace which he accomplished by strategically improving its marketing, public relations and retail banking operations.

A twenty year veteran of the banking industry, Merritt is a member of the Boards of Directors of the Caritas Carney Hospital Foundation, South Boston Community Health Center and the Massachusetts Bankers Association (Community Banking Committee). He also serves on the University of Massachusetts Boston's College of Management's Advisory Committee. Merritt earned his bachelor's degree from Salem State College and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Senior Vice President and Chief Loan Officer

Picture - Richard M. Costa, Senior Vice President of Retail Banking Richard M. Costa, Senior Vice President and Chief Loan Officer, is responsible for managing the business banking division and overseeing the growth and quality of the bank's loan portfolio. In 2004, Costa was instrumental in creating the business banking division. In its first two years of business lending the Bank has made more than 300 commercial real estate and business loans totaling more than $215 million.

Before joining Mt. Washington Bank in 1999, Costa spent seven years with The Cooperative Bank as Senior Vice President and Senior Loan Officer, where he was responsible for all residential, consumer and commercial loan originations and for the bank's portfolio administration. Earlier in his career, he held positions at Workingmen's Cooperative Bank and at Household Finance Corporation.

Costa's community activities include membership in the South Boston Chamber of Commerce, where Costa served as director from 2002 to 2006, and the Roslindale Board of Trade where he served as president from 1997 to 1999. He is also a member of the Massachusetts Mortgage Bankers Association and the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties.

Costa holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Eastern Nazarene College, and an M.B.A. from the University of Phoenix. A former sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, he is the father of nine children and grandfather of twelve.

Senior Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer

Picture - George M. Custodio, Senior Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer George M. Custodio, Senior Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer, is responsible for the areas of accounting, finance, compliance, human resources and institutional banking. He joined Mt. Washington Bank in 2001 as Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer, and was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2003. During his tenure, the bank has tripled its assets to over $450 million and has expanded and diversified its products and services to best serve its communities. Custodio plays an integral role in the bank's continuing evolution into a full service financial institution by investing in new technologies and supporting training and marketing programs.

Custodio has more than 20 years of experience in banking. Prior to joining Mt. Washington Bank, he was Treasurer and Controller for Peoples Bancshares, Inc. in Brockton, and before that he was Treasurer, Vice President and Controller for Massachusetts Co-Operative Bank in Boston. Earlier in his career, he worked with Fairhaven Savings Bank as an accounting officer, and with Joseph Orlando & Co. as a staff accountant.

He holds a B.S. degree from Providence College in accounting and is a member of the Financial Manager's Society. A father of two, Custodio volunteers with the youth soccer program in Dartmouth, where he coached the 2006 16 year-old girls travel team to a State Championship.

Senior Vice President of Residential and Consumer Lending & CRA Officer

Picture - Laura Dorfman, Senior Vice President of Residential and Consumer Lending & CRA Officer Laura Dorfman is the Senior Vice President of Residential and Consumer Lending & CRA Officer where she oversees the entire mortgage banking and consumer lending division. She joined the bank in 2002 and was responsible for creating a stand alone mortgage function and enhancing the bank's consumer lending activities. Named “One of the Top Ten Bosses in 2006” by Women's Business, Dorfman oversees a staff of fourteen professionals. With over twenty years of banking experience, particularly in the areas of retail and lending, she is also responsible for Mt. Washington Banks Community Reinvestment Act activities and programs including developing affordable housing programs and maintaining relationships with the local community development corporations and non-profit home buying counseling agencies.

Prior to joining Mt.Washington Bank, Dorfman served as the Senior Vice President for Residential Lending for two regional banks, where she was responsible for developing an affordable mortgage program, merging three separate mortgage divisions into one as a result of two acquisitions and advancing the bank's market position by positively impacting the customer service experience.

Dorfman is member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Mortgage Bankers Charitable Foundation, as well as a member of the Massachusetts Mortgage Bankers Association and The Boston Club, which is a professional woman's association. Community involvement is also a high priority for her as evidenced by her involvement in Aid for Cancer Research, a non-profit woman's organization that raises funds for cancer research and equipment. She is a graduate of Providence College and received an MBA from Bentley College.

Senior Vice President of Operations and Technology

Picture - Julie Jenkins, Senior Vice President of Operations and Technology Julie Jenkins is Senior Vice President of Operations and Technology, with responsibility for the implementation of all strategic initiatives at Mt. Washington Bank. Julie is also responsible for the overall management of the Management Information Systems, Deposit Operations, Retail Operations, Loan Operations and Training departments.. She joined the bank in 2004, and in her first year she managed a critical systems conversions project. The Bank replaced twelve software systems with new and improved technology with the goal of improving competitiveness in the Boston marketplace. She was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2005.

Before joining Mt Washington Bank, Jenkins was Senior Vice President, Operations and Technology for a large, regional bank where she managed 65 employees and was responsible for the implementation of all strategic initiatives. She has over 20 years of banking experience.

She holds a B.A. degree in management from Assumption College. A mother of four, Jenkins lives in Canton, Massachusetts.

Senior Vice President of Retail Banking

Picture - James Morgan, Senior Vice President of Retail Banking James Morgan is Senior Vice President of Retail Banking, with responsibility for managing all of the bank's branches, which now includes three in South Boston and one in Dorchester. A second Dorchester branch, to be located in Codman Square, is planned for a late summer opening in 2007. He is also responsible for the bank's “Ultimate Service” call center. He helped establish the Mt. Washington Bank Charitable Foundation in 2003. The Foundation is funded with 10 per cent of the bank's profits each year, and the proceeds are then used to fund many programs and charitable organizations in the communities Mt Washington serves. A banking veteran with over twenty years of experience, Morgan has successfully built a productive and diverse workforce and identified unique opportunities to offer financial services in the neighborhoods of Boston.

Morgan joined Mt. Washington Bank in 2002. Before that, he held the position of Director of Retail Banking at BankBoston's First Community Bank, where he started as a branch manager. There he managed a 42 branch network located in low to moderate income urban neighborhoods in southern New England. First Community Bank was nationally recognized as a model for delivering financial services in low to moderate income urban communities. Earlier in his career he held several positions with First Mutual of Boston.

He holds a B.A. degree in Political Science from Boston College. In addition to being very active in all facets of his parish, St. Mary's of Winchester, Morgan and his family annually host the “Donald and Eddie Morgan Memorial Golf Tournament” to benefit the Cranberry Hospice of Plymouth.
